The Ball Point Pen Is Really Cool!

Yep, they’re fairly cheap and readily available.  They’re portable, you can take them anywhere and doodle at Barnes & Nobel or on the patio.  The fabulous ball point pen!  Next I’ll be trying colored ball point pens.  Could be a whole new thing. Meanwhile, I’ve loaded a whole new gallery of Black and White art that you might enjoy so take a look.

New Collection of Black & White Graphics

Graphic #8

In 2011 I created a portfolio of work that was almost exclusively bold with saturated color.  Beginning in 2012 I’m changing it up a bit with some black and white graphic designs.  Some will be converted to color and will join the Digital Gallery, while the rest will remain black and white with the originals and prints available for sale.

You might call these “Advanced Doodles.”  Believe it or not, most were done with inexpensive ball point pens and Sharpies!  I never really know how they’ll turn out.  There’s seldom a plan.  Hope you like them.

Please sign up to receive email updates from Bad Bird Studio.  If you include your snail mail address I’ll send you something cool in the mail!

2012 Will Rock!

Joy Comes From Giving Thanks

Greetings wonderful friends!  Hope you all had a great holiday!

I’m hopeful that 2012 will be a time of very exciting change.  I’ve been more than ready and didn’t realize it.  We can look at necessary change as painful or as adventure.  It’s our choice.  Me?  I choose adventure!

In the months to come I’ll be announcing some new projects that I hope you’ll be excited about and will want to join me in.  Keeping it a secret for now.  You’ll have to come back for updates.

Meanwhile, here is a new drawing to get you started on a new year.  Enjoy and be sure to keep in touch.  I’m hoping to make this website more user friendly and easier to navigate and communicate – as I learn how.

Now go and find something that brings you joy.  Write it down.  Practice gratitude!

Navigate to the store and see what’s available.  Thanks!

More Crazy Plants

Fly Catcher Plant

Some plants need to attract protein as nourishment.  I don’t know why.  That’s the mystery of a Venus Flytrap.  This week, to amuse myself, I created a whole new bizarre plant that attracts flies but not in the same way as the Venus Flytrap.  This plant is part vine, part python.  It attracts flies, perhaps by smell, then wraps tendrils around it like a python squeezing its prey to death.  Cool, huh?  I know, I’m sick.  Enjoy my macabre sense of humor.

What are You Having for Dinner?

When I do my weekly drawing, sometimes I just try to amuse myself!  A couple of weeks ago I gave you a very thorny plant.  This week I give you a plant with a viscious taste for something meaty – like a Venus flytrap with a tongue.  However, I’m pretty sure this plant isn’t just looking for flies.  What do you think?

Have a great art week!

Cats Leave the Most Wonderful Gifts

Cat and Mouse

All the cat owners I know say they have a “love/hate” relationship with their cat’s sense of giving.  I suppose housecats feel they have to prove their loyalty or at least their worth.  Therefore what’s the best gift a cat can give its owner?  A great leg rub?  A soft furry footstool?  A neck nuzzle?

Most cats seem to think the best gift their owner can receive is a nice dead mouse at the door.  I had a cat visit me recently and she stayed for about a month.  I watched her come and go and was glad to have her.  I figured I’d maybe get a couple of dead mice or rats out of the situation.  What I got instead was a litter of kittens, two of which I had to find homes for when momma cat took off and left them to die in a large terracotta urn next to the pool.  Thanks a lot.  Never did get the dead mouse or rat.  Oh well.  The kittens were adopted and this incident lead to this week’s artistic inspiration.  Enjoy and have a great art week.

My Dangerous Garden

Do you have a dangerous garden with poisonous plants or some that cause injury if you wander too close?  I do, I like it and I don’t know why.  Maybe it’s a way of keeping certain animals or people away?

I love plants that have been given the means to protect themselves.  Why are we fascinated with a Venus Flytrap?  Or plants that can trap insects in their sticky pitch?  Or those that can kill you with one swallow of their berry.  There’s something intelligent about a plant that can protect itself.  I have a lot of respect for “Smart Plants.”  (Maybe we should call them “iPlants.”)

This week, as a Halloween tribute I suppose, I invented a whole new plant species with awesome red thorns and blood red leaves.  Maybe if this plant actually existed it would keep away the ground squirrels destroying my real garden.  If pitted against my “iPlant”, I don’t think the squirrels would be back, do you?  Enjoy a great week in art.

What Cats Do

Cat & Pussywillows

Personally I don’t have a cat.  Wish I could but my bad bird won’t permit it.   All animals do funny stuff, but cats crack me up.  They get so embarrassed when they are caught falling off of something of making a dumb move and they know you saw them.  Then they give you the “what are you lookin’ at?” look and wander off humilated.  I love that cats can get embarrassed just like people.

I’m doing a series of cat art, some of which will turn into greeting cards.  But for now, just the original art will be posted for your enjoyment.  Hope you like my cats.  I do.  Enjoy a fun week in art.

Flowers & Thorns

Flowers & Thorns

Artist Georgia O’Keefe  loved focusing on an item in a macrovision style.   Her closeups of flowers made her a very unique artist.

While this work isn’t as close up and therefore as abstract as hers, it’s sort of a tribute to her ideas about art.  Sometimes it’s better to look closely and focus narrowly in order to see the intricate beauty and composition of creation.  You never know what you’ll find if you look deep.

Have a great artistic week.
