The Pilgrimage

The Pilgrimage
Have you ever met someone, however briefly, who moved you in a way you couldn’t explain?
The subject of this piece is dedicated to Brother Kelly Cullen of San Luis Rey Mission in Oceanside, CA.
I met Brother Kelly, a Franciscan Friar, for a brief five minutes last year while attending a mass at the Mission with a Catholic friend. Brother Kelly was charismatic, engaging and filled with joy. I just found him delightful and wished I could have spent more time in his presence. I would have gotten to know him better, and when I did, I would have asked him about his calling to join the Franciscan order and give up his rights to all material things. It fascinates me how a person arrives at that decision. Or is it a calling? Brother Kelly probably would have said it was supernatural, because God has to replace that part of our human nature that wants or needs to acquire “stuff” on earth, with the joy of serving Him.
Near the end of 2010 Brother Kelly traveled to Italy to make a pilgrimage to the ancient gates of Assisi, the home of St. Francis. Tragically he died there and left behind thousands of people, both at his previous parish in San Francisco and at Mission San Luis Rey, who loved him and will miss his engaging presence on this earth.
But God must have thought him so delightful He called Kelly home. While we morn his passing, we know that he not only completed his pilgrimage to Assisi, but his pilgrimage into the presence of his Lord.
Look closely. Brother Kelly is far ahead of the others on the road – the first in line to reach the gates!
Prints of the Pilgrimage are being donated to help fund The San Luis Rey Sports Court/Parking lot for the parish and Mission San Luis Rey Retreat Center where Kelly worked. This was a cause near and dear to Brother Kelly’s heart and it’s my hope that “The Pilgrimage” will bring much needed support to one of California’s most precious historical Missions.
Thanks for your support. and you may order prints from Jackie Bickford at bicx5@cox.net or by calling Jackie directly at (760) 522-7358.
After the fundraiser is complete, prints and greeting cards of ”The Pilgrimage” will be available from Bad Bird Studio.

Art For Water
“20 million people in Pakistan are without water. Millions in Africa and Southeast Asia without potable water.”
Can you imagine what it would be like to have no water to drink? Unthinkable. Charity Water is an organization devoted soley to bringing CLEAN water to those who have no access. To learn more about Charity Water, please click here: http://www.charitywater.org/
This month the Arts Community is coming together for Blog Action Day, October 15th, to highlight this issue and make people aware of what they can do to help. Artists are creating a water themed piece of work to bring the necessity of water to the forefront of our thinking. We take water for granted in the United States. Other countries are not so fortunate. To find out more about Blog Action Day, please click here: http://blogactionday.change.org/
My contribution to Blog Action Day, which we’ve titled Art Action Day is Desert Oasis. This is a work of Art Photography, and is a view of my pool. (Yes, I’m very blessed!) Birds visit daily, including crows, hummingbirds and roadrunners. Not long ago a duck stopped by for a swim and a refreshing drink. If animals can find potable water, isn’t it unacceptable that scores of people cannot?
I hope you’re inspired to learn more about Charity Water. Thanks for visiting Art For a Cause.

Update on Chelsea’s Law
Finally! Gov. Schwarzenegger has signed off on Chelsea’s Law! Thanks to all those who have tirelessly worked toward this goal . . . and to Chelsea’s family for propelling the tragedy of her death to the most noble level. Now we hope that judges will follow through and do the right thing when these violent predators stand before them. We’ve asked the question, “how many more of our children have to die before something is done?” And the answer is “Not One More!” Thank you Gov. Schwarzenegger for your courage.
Thank You Lorene Johnson
A big thanks to Lorene Johnson of Willis Allen Real Estate in Fallbrook, CA for also joining me in Art For A Cause. It seems everyone I talk to is demanding big changes in California Laws regarding violent sexual offenders. We are tired of the news stories in which tragedy could have been avoided if certain violent criminals are kept away from society. Thanks for taking a stand. Amber DuBois and Chelsea King will be remembered and honored. I appreciate it and so do their families.

Thanks Loan Warehouse

Thanks Loan Warehouse of Fallbrook, CA for joining with me in Art For A Cause. “Amber’s Lamb” and “Chelsea’s Light” greeting cards will be used for their clients, half of proceeds going to Chelsea’s Light Foundation and Amber Dubois Foundation for Search and Rescue.
At the same time they will be informing those they reach with the message that Chelsea and Amber were precious San Diego girls whose lives were cut terribly short by a monster among us. The purpose of these foundations are to help change our current laws regarding violent sexual predators, increasing the penalty for such horrific crimes that tear our families apart.
I thank Julie and Patrick Marelly of Loan Warehouse, Fallbrook, for their contribution and dedication to this serious cause. I’m honored they chose my work for communicating with their clients.
