Autism

autism

Here’s a new piece inspired by the movie “Temple Grandin,” which recently won a few Emmys.  Temple  made a huge contribution to the world and yet she suffers from autism – a condition that makes her brain function on a different level than most of ours.  Her ability to think visually is remarkable.  At the same time, noise and certain visual distractions cause her agony.

She didn’t speak until she was 4 years old.  Doctors recommended she be institutionalized.  Fortunately she had people in her life who refused to give up on her.  They recognized her heightened abilities and encouraged her to go to college where she learned animal husbandry, worked in the cattle industry and invented new methods in caring for animals.  Imagine if she had spent her life in an institution, regarded as unreachable, when the whole time her mind was creating rich ideas and inventive thoughts.  Autistic minds take unique direction and perhaps that’s the theme of this drawing.  Hope you enjoy it.
